After Outcry, Government Backpedals Over Internet-Filtering Software

Last week, the Chinese government provoked a firestorm of criticism when it announced that starting 1 July, all computers sold in China must have a new software program meant to filter pornographic images and block content that offends government sensibilities, such as discussion of the banned sect Falun Gong. But scientists whose work was the basis for text filtering are distancing themselves from the controversial software. And as Science went to press, it appeared that the government may not force computer users to run the "censorware" after all.
