Farthest Supernova Yet Bolsters Dark Energy

A star exploding in another galaxy has just given a fresh boost to the theory that the universe is flying apart at ever-increasing speeds. The most distant supernova ever discovered, SN1997ff, is so bright that it rules out two popular explanations for the systematic dimming of distant supernovae, bolstering the case for unseen "dark energy" that is pushing the universe apart.
