Defying Skeptics, Richard Scheller Thinks Genentech Will Thrive

Roche's acquisition of Genentech has been bemoaned as the end of an era. Now that he is allowed to speak publicly, Richard Scheller, Genentech's new executive vice president for research and early development, spoke with Science last week about what the merger with Roche will (and mostly won't) mean for research at Genentech. He says he will run Genentech as an independent research center. His comments have been edited for brevity.
